PM Modi officially opens the Sela Tunnel
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Sela Tunnel, the longest twin-lane tunnel in the world. The PM took part in the “Viksit Bharat Viksit North East” initiative, and the inauguration event was held in Itanagar. Along with these initiatives, PM Modi introduced a number of other development projects in the state, like as the ₹10,000 crore UNNATI plan.
Built at an elevation of 13,000 feet, the Sela Tunnel cost ₹825 crore and was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). There are two tunnels in the project: Tunnel 1 is 1,003 meters long, and Tunnel 2 is 1,595 meters long with twin tubes. Two 8.6-kilometer roads are also part of the project. The tunnel’s maximum speed of 80 kmph is intended to accommodate 2,000 trucks and 3,000 vehicles per day of traffic.
Because it will allow for year-round access to Tawang, which borders China, the tunnel is important. Additionally, it will expedite the deployment of troops, equipment, and weaponry to forward areas close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by at least an hour of travel time to Tawang.
